ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL RADAR BRACKET. HOW NOT TO MEND IT
The radar at the front of your car, historically found on Volkswagon Audi Skoda and Mercedes, but now very common on all makes and models of vehicle, even lorries and motorbikes, is an intricate piece of equipment, that relies on so many other factors and systems such as ABS, Cameras, Instrument clusters and Sonars.
This radar is housed very precisely, by special clamps or clips (or a combination of both).
In the event of a frontal accident, the mounting bracket or housing can be compromised and thus altering the angle that the radar sits. The Radar for ACC or Active Brake Assist must be securely fitted within its mounting bracket so that the face of the radar is at an angle predetermined by the manufacturers and commonly found in the Service Information Document.
If the Radar bracket isnt in the condition that it left the factory, for whatever reason, then the Radar will not be calibrated properly, if at all .
Loose fitting radars are able to move whilst the vehicle is being driven. If they move, even 2 or 3 mm the sofisticated equipment will recognise that it is no longer facing the correct direction and will cause a fault to be present on the instrument cluster. The only way to remove this fault, is to recalibrate the Radar. But , if it isn’t mounted properly, it wont calibrate.
They only way to ensure a successful Radar calibration is to replace the bracket that houses the radar, with a new and original one.
So if the Radar bracket has been compromised in any way, broken tabs, cracked housing , or bent metal structure, it needs replacing before we are able to calibrate successfully and following manufacturers procedures.
We will not, and neither will any reputable professional technician, attempt a calibration to a radar that isn’t secured correctly as it was when it left the factory.
We have seen them all, tie wraps, zip ties, string, nuts bolts and washer combos, silicone , and wedges of cardboard.
The only correct way to mount a Radar is the way it left the factory
